Although anxiety is often perceived as a disorder for grownups, there are also a number of kids who suffer from it too. Recent studies show that children can benefit from taking drugs. These anti anxiety medications for children consist of options such as antidepressants, anxiety medications, tricyclics and beta-blockers.
Among the different types of anti anxiety drugs for children, Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most commonly used. Some examples of SSRIs are Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil. SSRIs are being prescribed once the different anxiety symptoms start interfering with a child's normal routine. Some medical professionals prescribe this type of medication in conjunction with cognitive-behavioral therapy. On the other hand, there are some who only use SSRIs after psychotherapy has been ineffective. SSRIs are usually taken with few or no side effects. The common side effects that children have experienced include headache, nausea, stomachache, and difficulty sleeping.
Another type of medication for children is Tricyclics. These have been significantly studied and are proven efficient. Although they have been around longer than SSRIs, they are less prescribed than SSRIs because they are known to trigger side effects. Some of these side effects are dizziness, drowsiness, putting on weight, and dry mouth.
Monoamine Oxidase inhibitors, or MAOIs, are another type of anti anxiety medication for children. MAOIs are the oldest form of antidepressant medication and are best known for dealing with anxiety disorders. Again, SSRIs are generally recommended over MAOIs because these have been known to hinder certain foods and medicines.
Although antidepressant medications have proven helpful for treating anxiety, there are still other forms of medication for children that are able to relieve anxiety symptoms and have a few side effects. These drugs are called benzodiazepines, which are able to lessen symptoms on a short-term basis. Beta-blockers can also be prescribed as anti anxiety medication for children, as they help stop anxiety symptoms from occurring.
