Pets are part of our homes and are considered as part of the family. They give happiness to their owners and can relieve stress to family members. Unfortunately, a number of people suffer from pet allergies nowadays and display pet allergy symptoms. These symptoms are hard to live with because most owners love their pets and want to cuddle and play them. Management of this kind of allergy should be handled properly as not to disrupt the relationship between the owner and the furry companion.

Usually pets live around the house, sit on the sofa or in front of the fireplace, play on the lawn, and even watch television with family members. The proteins from the household pet's hair, saliva, and urine can cause these symptoms such as hay fever, teary eyes, runny nose, and asthmatic symptoms. These things usually stick on the carpet. Pet allergens are proteins which when in contact and breathed in by the body cause allergic reaction that trigger the body system to release a chemical messenger called histamine. The histamine produces inflammation and irritation of the air pipe. Having a pet allergy usually runs in the family; children with asthmatic bronchitis are at risk of developing pet allergies as they grow older.

To prevent symptoms, refrain from using carpet inside the house and use hardwood or tile flooring instead. Although it is costly, it is worth spending especially if one of the family members is known to have a pet allergy. Buying pets with little fur is also an option to limit the occurrence of these symptoms. If allergy still present, keeping fish is an option. Anti-allergy medications can also be taken once the symptoms trigger to manage the effect, as well as nasal spray and eye drops.

However for severe cases it is better to seek medical help. If pet allergy symptoms are suspected, a family member should stay away first from home for several days to check if the allergies really came from pets. Consult a doctor immediately so that allergy test can be done the condition.
